The Ulster Ballad Tradition

The Ulster ballad tradition is one that illustrates the cultural diversity of Ireland’s northern province. Len’s style in particular is indicative of the northeastern Ulster tradition—a blending of songs from the Irish and Scottish tradition ranging from children’s songs to songs of love, emigration, murder, and humor. Students will learn a wide range of songs in the English language from Len’s repertoire. Lyric sheets will be provided. Please bring a recording device.

The Gaelic Song Traditions of Ireland and Scotland

Instructor: Brian Hart
Sat., August 28, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., $35.

The Gaelic singing traditions from Ireland and Scotland flow from the same cultural and linguistic source but their social and historical development has contributed to their very distinct forms today. This workshop will focus on understanding these various song forms while learning the choruses of Scots Gaelic working songs and Irish Gaelic lighthearted songs. No understanding of either language is required; minor instruction in the language will be given. Please bring a recording device.

Classic Songs from the 60s and 70s: The Vocal Harmonies

In many of the memorable recordings of the 60s and 70s, the vocal harmonies were just as important as the guitar parts. Frank learned those harmony parts right off the records, and performed them for years in duo acts and cover bands. He’ll help you recreate them, showing you how to layer the vocal parts in to create textured sound just like the Beatles, the Byrds, the Beach Boys, the Mamas and Papas, and more.
