Using the Guitar (or Banjo) as a Tool for Songwriting

The guitar is a great tool for creating songs. We’ll cover how songs can evolve from guitar figures, rhythmic grooves, and melodies inspired by playing in alternate tunings. The banjo also has its own unique qualities that can be utilized in songwriting. Students will be encouraged to re-think their use of chords by adding or leaving out notes ordinarily used in songwriting. We’ll develop song ideas individually and in small groups.
