Using a Capo to Change Keys and Modes
Instructor: Heidi Muller
Sat., May 12, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., $35 ($60 for both of this instructor’s workshops).
Players with experience in DAD tuning will learn how using a capo changes not only your key but the mode (scale) you’re playing. Since the dulcimer is a diatonic instrument, the capo can take you into interesting new territory, opening up music in the keys of Em, G, A and Am. We’ll learn some tunes in each, and explore how to apply what you know about playing on open strings to these new capoed keys. Heidi Muller is a songwriter, guitarist and mountain dulcimer player who has taught and performed nationwide for over 25 years. www.heidimuller.com

West Virginia Fiddle Tunes & Songs
Instructor: Heidi Muller
Sat., May 12, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., $35 ($60 for both of this instructor’s workshops).
Heidi has lived in Charleston, WV for the last seven years, absorbing much of the old-time music there. Advanced beginners to intermediate players will enjoy these easy tunes (and some harder ones, depending on students’ abilities) that have roots in the mountains of West Virginia. We’ll also play chords and accompany ourselves singing a song or two from the Appalachian tradition. Sources include the Hammons Family, Ernie Carpenter, Lester McCumbers and others. Heidi has collected WV music for a new dulcimer book that should be available by May. She’s also published Waltz books and Bill Staines songbooks for mountain dulcimer. www.heidimuller.com
