Join Bertram Levy, one of the foremost performers, innovators, and teachers of the Anglo concertina, for this daylong set of intensive workshops based on methods as described in his new book, “American Fiddle Styles for the Anglo Concertina”. The workshops will aim to cover techniques for learning tunes efficiently and developing a better understanding of fingering options. In addition, the participants will learn the elements of style in playing American fiddle tunes. Please bring a 30 button C/G Anglo Concertina. Workshop 1: Learning tunes in phrases. Starting with simple tunes, we will explore the technique for visualizing phrases in the form of hand shapes. Tunes: “Shoes and Stockings”, “Old Molly Hare”, and “Lady of the Lake”. For all levels. Take all three workshops for $75.

Explore stylistic techniques of double stops, triplets, and counterpoint as ornamentation for American fiddle tunes: “Shady Grove”, “Granny”, “Sally Ann Johnson”, and “28th of January”. Intermediate-Advanced. Take all three workshops for $75.

Continue on with Bertram Levy, one of the foremost performers, innovators, and teachers of the Anglo concertina, in this second workshp based on methods as described in his new book, “American Fiddle Styles for the Anglo Concertina”. Study principles of harmonic arrangements of fiddle tunes through counterpoint and chords. Tunes: “Rock the Cradle Joe, and “Rose Division”. Intermediate-advanced. Bertram Levy’s first book, “The Anglo Concertina Demystified” (published 1984), continues to be sold worldwide and is considered “without peer, the definitive instruction manual for the instrument…” As a performer, he has appeared on film soundtracks, National Public Radio, and numerous recordings. His 1986 record, “First Generation,” was selected for a Grammy nomination. Levy is also a major force in the revival of Southern fiddle music. His landmark 1967 recording with the Hollow Rock String Band is included in the Smithsonian collection entitled “American Folk Music.” His recent book, “American Fiddle Styles for the Anglo Concertina,” reflects the author’s long experience with Southern fiddle music and his deep understanding of the Anglo concertina.
