Teacher Biography: Sarah has a Bachelor's degree in Instrumental Music Education (K-12) from Appalachian State University in North Carolina, and has extensive performance experience in solo, chamber, and ensemble settings. She has taught privately since 2001, and enjoys the many "light bulb" moments, small victories, and self discoveries that happen with students in week-to-week lessons. Sarah’s goal is to create a positive, flexible musical learning experience for every student, regardless of age or ability. She believes that learning to play an instrument takes courage, and explores this idea in lessons. Sarah offers students a foundational music education based around flute technique, tone work, breathing and posture, musical expression, music literacy, and field trips and performance.

 

 

Carolyn Cruso

Teacher biography: Carolyn is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and touring musician. She has recorded six CDs of her own music and one of traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, and various European countries. She studied classical flute in her teens and has a degree in Environmental Conservation. Carolyn has extensive experience as an environmental educator teaching both youth and adults, and has brought many aspects of this experience to her ten years of hammered dulcimer teaching. Carolyn essentially taught herself to play the hammered dulcimer, and is now known as an innovator, taking the instrument to new places through experimentation and development of new techniques. Susan (Tudy) McLain

Teacher Biography
Susan (Tudy) McLain has studied Irish flute and pennywhistle for thirty years under such luminaries as Joe Heaney, Cathal McConnel, Nich Vorhees, and Stuart Williams. She was an avid session player and performed with Cricket on the Hearth and with Laurie Riley and Michael MacBean at the Olympic Music Festival and subsequent tours. She served for seven years as President of Seattle Musicians Association Local 76-493, and has been a professional harpist for over twenty-five years. She will work with you to find some way, however small, for the Irish flute or pennywhistle to become a part of your being, working with authentic ornaments, phrasing, and sound production from the ancient traditions. No written music!
