Bluegrass Jams

Every Fourth Saturday of the Month
3:30–5:30 p.m.

Next Jam: May 19
Note - date shifted due to Folklife

May 19, Special Guest Bill Scott will lead the jam. “Banjo Bill” Scott has been playing banjo for fifty-three years, and was the first musician to perform in the Kingdome. For the past forty years he has been a regular member in many Seattle-area bluegrass bands, from his first band, Mountain County Co-op, to his most recent band, the Howdy Boys. He teaches privately, and recently assisted Rob Bulkley guitar in this jam session when he was unable to play and has attended a few other times, too. About five years ago, he substitute-led the UW’s evening bluegrass class for several weeks during the summer. His favorite pickers are Don Reno and Earl Scruggs. “Dig out your favorite Reno and Smiley tune and find out if I can play the banjo breaks to it! I’m looking forward to jamming with you.”

Every Fourth Saturday, Rob Bulkley and friends host a bluegrass jam. Rob currently plays guitar and sings bluegrass with The Howdy Boys of Seattle. He has been participating in and leading jam sessions since at least 1973 – slow, fast, and everywhere in between. For several years Rob facilitated the slow jams at Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Music Kamp in Tennessee. He has a huge repertoire of singable bluegrass and country songs. Bring your favorite songs. Rob will happily call out the chords! He’ll pace this bluegrass jam according to the abilities and wishes of the participants.
