Bowed Psalteries

The bowed psaltery is a multi-stringed instrument that is played with a bow. Unlike the violin, on which different notes can be produced from each string by shortening the string length with the fingers, on the bowed psaltery different notes are played by bowing different strings. Although many people think of it as an old instrument, it is actually an early 20th-Century design based on much older instruments. Many players find it well suited for playing traditional Celtic and American tunes as well as Renaissance music.
